Liquid Propane Fact Sheet

posted May 29, 2010, 8:05 PM by Jud Berman [ updated Oct 6, 2011, 5:52 AM ]

    • Boiling point of propane is -44 degrees Fahrenheit
    • Under moderate pressure propane will change from a Gas to a Liquid at atmospheric temperatures
    • In a liquid state propane looks like water
      • It is colorless, tasteless and odorless
      • Ethyl Mercaptan is assed to propane so that it can be detected when there is a leak
    • Propane is a NON-TOXIC Gas however
    • One gallon weighs 4.24 pounds
      • That makes it heavier that air
      • Since it is heavier than air if there is a release in a confined space it will displace the air and cause a suffocation hazard
    • Propane has a very limited flammable range
      • The flammable range is 2.4% – 9.5%
    • Propane expands and contracts readily with change in temperature (see note below)

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO COOL DOWN THE TANK AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
TEAMWORK AND COMMUNICATION ARE GOING TO BE THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS IN AN EFFECTIVE OPERATION
